G-Man’s highlights of 2016: Day 16 – Cognition

cognition

Cognition was released this year through Kickstarter campaigns for issues #0 & #1 and creator Ken Reynolds teamed-up with Sam Bentley to bring us the dark world of the British Occult Secret Service (B.O.S.S.).

It’s been billed as a “supernatural-noir-adventure” and while that’s true it feels even darker than that suggests thanks to some work from the creative team.  Ken’s introduction to the main characters of Cal, a steam powered automaton inhabited by a human spirit, and Sigma, a demonically possessed mouse, is so matter-of-fact that it’s refreshing to be dropped into a story where we’re left to try and figure out an origin or possible reason these two characters came to be working together by ourselves.  While issue #0 introduced us to the main premise and the central characters across three short stories it really hit the ground running with a full story in issue #1, with more of the same on the way after I caught up with Ken for an interview earlier in the year too.  Dark & moody main characters mixed with finely detailed art in a well-paced story wins the day and I’m hoping to see more of this in 2017.

You can pick these issues up over on the Cognition online shop and keep an eye on what’s happening next over on the Facebook& Twitter pages.
