Highlights of 2015 Day 7 – Marvel & Netflix

Marvel have been pretty consistent with their Cinematic Universe but 2015 saw them bring two of their characters to the small screen thanks to Netflix…..and the results were astounding.

First to be released was Daredevil a character that had suffered from a poor response to an average movie outing back in 2003.  The bad memories of that were surely bubbling away under the surface ahead of the season 1 release of this new incarnation…..and a weekend of binge watching all 10 episodes would see critics & fans embrace this new gritty version with open arms and a sense of relief.  Phenomenal casting that included Charlie Cox (Matt/DD), Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin), Elden Henson (Foggy) plus everyone else were all spot-on and great story-telling in each episode built up the arrival of a new hero to the streets of Hell’s Kitchen.  While Matt Murdock swaggered about the court by day & flexed his crime-fighting muscles by night he brought hope to the residents of NYC and the avid fans who saw a realistic portrayal of a character that already impressed in the pages of the comic flooded social media with praise for this bold new direction.

The next release from Marvel/Netflix ventured into new territory with Jessica Jones and aimed to surpass what had gone before and while I personally don’t think it quite managed to better Daredevil, it was another stunning cast brought together to tell a gritty, no holds barred story.  Ex-superhero turned Private Investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is haunted by her past encounter with Kilgrave (David Tennant) and her drunken attempts to fill the gap between cases does help when he returns to pursue her.  Luke Cage (Mike Colter) is introduced as a love interest/ally and the same brutal world we saw in Daredevil plays out……to a similar level of positive response for a new flawed, small screen hero.

Roll on the next series of these two shows and the arrival of Iron Fist, Punisher, The Defenders and more in future releases.  LONG LIVE BINGE WATCH WEEKENDS!!
