Nick Gonzo writes & draws 50 Signal – a space adventure story released through Madius Comics.
We open with another day exploring an uncharted planet as our astronaut central character lives his solitary life as he aims to satisfy his three main goals:
- Investigation
- Documentation
- Salvage
Although we soon find out that it’s not your standard training program that’s got him into space as he’s been designed to explore space from birth with a ship that’s been grown for the same purpose. Far from being your run-of-the-mill ship though, it’s a living entity in it’s own right – one that’s been linked to it’s astronaut from early on in both their lives to allow the loneliness of space seem less overpowering.
His latest mission finds him exploring the remains of a space-giant on the wilderness planet he’s landed on but a simple, routine mission is not what we get. The hollowed out bones of the space-giant brings with the discovery of a robot that seems to know our intrepid explorer……….but this is the start of the real mystery as a door appears and we get a “WTF?” moment that marks an ending that leaves us wanting more.
Very much a cult feel to this release with the likes of movies Silent Running or Moon springing to mind with their big questions and muted vibe. Nick writes a great opening issue that sets up the background of the space program and the crucial ending that leaves us guessing what the hell could happen next. Nick’s art is simplistic but it’s charm suits the cult vibe for this issue #1 and while this won’t be to everyone’s taste…..I thought it was pretty much perfect for the story.
Head over to their website to get your hands on the title as soon as it’s out & keep tabs on their future releases on their Facebook page or Tumblr.
